If you are looking for a step-by-step guide on how to do CAC registration for business name, congratulations! You’re in the right place.
You may have also found yourself here because you have already started the process but got a CAC query along the line and you’re looking for a way to resolve the matter. Whichever is your own case, I’d like to congratulate you once again because you’re in good hands.
CAC did an upgrade on their website between 28th December 2020 and 3rd January 2021. They have changed the URL for registration to this new one. Therefore be guided as you work on your application process.
Before we continue, let me make a request. I’ve noticed rather sadly that many people don’t get to see this website until they have made their mistakes and sometimes these mistakes are costly mistakes that make them pay N2000, N5000 or N7000 extra! And these would have been avoided if they had read this guide before they started out.
I want us to do a campaign of getting this article on the first page of google so that other people coming after us will be able to see it and avoid all the costly mistakes that some of you have made. So my request is simple, make sure you leave a comment after reading through the article. You either ask a question, make a contribution or just thank me for writing this guide for you.
If every reader of this article will comment, in just one week we’re going to get so much engagement that this article would find its way to the top of google for so many keywords. I count so much on you all my esteemed website visitors. Thanks.
That said, if you are a business owner in Nigeria, it is important to get your business registered so that you will be operating as a legal entity recognised by the Government of the land. There are many benefits for registering a business.
Today what I want to do is give you a step by step guide on how to register business name with CAC in 24 hours or even less (Because of the COVID – 19 pandemic, the CAC isn’t working at full capacity, therefore it may not be posible for you to finish in 24 hours). I’m going to take you through the entire process with no step missed.
Update – 11th July, 2020:
It took me some days to write this entire guide because I didn’t want to skip any step. But it has come to my attention based on the number of calls I receive daily from people that many of the website visitors don’t like reading through the article to pick out the information that they quite know they need. They’d rather call and be asking me questions about what I’ve already taken time to write about step by step.
Please I’d like to make it clear that the WhatsApp number I provided at the end of the article is not for anybody to call me for anything but rather to alert me through WhatsApp message or SMS that you’ve left a comment for me and you need my prompt response probably because you’re still online and would like to get a response immediately. If not in a hurry, be sure that I’ll come around to respond in due time.
We can only receive your call on one condition and that’s if you need us to do the registration process. Other than that, please leave your question in the comments section and i’ll respond to you as fast as I can.
Before we roll on, I’d like you to know what the CAC registration fees (Click the link) are for the different services offered by the CAC.
So are you ready? Let’s dive in…
Step 1: Account Creation
The first thing you need to do to create your account is to go to the Corporate Affairs Commission’s website.
While on the website, click on “Start” to get started. Fill the form as shown below.
When’re done filling out the form Click “Register” to submit your form.
Login to your email for a verification email that would be sent to you from CAC.
When click the link in your link to complete your registration, that would be all. You’re done with your account creation. Congratulations!
Next is to login and continue with name reservation.
Step 2: Name Reservation
The next step in the process is name reservation. So you need to log on to your account.
Once logged in, click “here” to proceed with your name reservation.
As you go to the next page, there are things to take special note of. Read very carefully.
When’ve noted all the above, you may continue to fill your reservation form.
Enter your reason for availability search as shown below.
Enter nature of business. Then save and continue as shown in the images below.
The next stage is going to have some fields pre filled. You just need to select your ID type and the ID number.
The next page will take you the preview of what you’ve filled. Make sure every of your details is correct. If there’s any mistake anywhere, go back to the particular stage and edit.
Still, on the preview page, click to proceed to payment.
Note that once you proceed to payment, you CANNOT edit your details again!
The next page takes you to where you can make payment through the Remita platform. Click on the Remita icon.
Next you’re going to be taken to the remita platform in order to complete the payment with the amount you’re to pay shown clearly.
Select by what means you want to pay.
If you’re going to pay by “Card” like I always do, you’ll have to activate your ATM cards for online payment. In the FAQs click on “How do I activate my cards for OTP at the ATM” This means you’ll have to visit an ATM.
That said, let’s continue.
Follow the process until you complete the payment. It’s quite straight forward. Find below pictures of the process.
Click on Dashboard to see the status of your reservation.
We can see that reservation is pending approval.
After a few hours, Boom! Our business name has been reserved! Click on that “Reserved” icon to go to the next page.
This opens and you get to print it.
With this, we’re done with the reservation process. What we’ll do next is to go into the registration process proper. I hope you’ve been following without any difficulty.
If any step isn’t clear to you, just head down to comments and drop me your questions. I’ll respond to you within one hour except if I’m asleep.
Step 3: Business Name Registration
Having reserved your business name, you need to get the availability code to proceed with your registration.
Here’s where you enter the availability code.
Availability code entered!
A form is going to open up for you to enter your details. Most of the details would already be there from your reservation. You just need to enter “former name” if any and “former nationality” if any and then “Start Registration.”
You’re then taken to stage 2 of the registration process as seen below. Enter the necessary fields, then save and proceed.
In stage 3, do not enter anything if you’re the sole proprietor. If you own the business with your spouse, another corporate entity or your child as the case may be, you can add “Individual, Corporate or Minor Proprietor” respectively. Otherwise, just leave it like that and click “Continue.”
Stage 4 is to “Add Nature of Business.” Choose the category of your business and add the services you render or the products you provide. You can add more “Nature of Business” or just click “Continue.”
The next stage is to select where you want to go and pick up your certificate when ready.
There’s a mistake people make here that I want you to avoid.
DO NOT SELECT ANY ADDITIONAL CERTIFIED TRUE COPIES.
This will increase your bill at checkout. Be guided.
Stage 6 takes you to preview what you’ve entered. Go through and make sure you didn’t make any mistake. If there’s a mistake, you would like to go back and correct it. If there’s none, you can proceed to “Payment.”
The payment procedure is pretty much the same as you did for name reservation.
Select how you want to pay.
I use my ATM card. I’ve shown you how to activate your card for online payment.
Wait for the payment to process.
You’re done with your payment. You need to print out your receipt. Log on to your account or click “Dashboard” if you’re logged in already. Then click on “Pending Approval.”
On the next page, click on your business name. You’ll be taken to a page you’re going to see “Documents” and “Payment History.” Click on “Payment History.”
The next page is going to allow you print the receipt.
Step 4: Documents Upload
If you clicked “Documents” instead of “Payment History” in the previous step, you’ll be taken to where to download and print Application Form for Business Name (CAC/BN/1) as can be seen below.
The next thing to do is to print, sign the form and affix your passport photograph.
Update: 4th June, 2020
A reader asked a question in the comments section about section F of the form talking about Commissioner of Oaths and I responded to him as can be seen in the screenshot below.
There are three pages of this form. Scan the three pages and save as PDF in one file.
Here are the other list of documents to upload for CAC business name registration. You need to scan and save them as PDF:
- Notice of Approval (Availability Printout)
- Payment Receipt
- Means of Identification
When have all these documents scanned and saved on your laptop, it’s time to upload them.
You’re going to be taken to the “Document Upload Service” page where you’re going to start by entering your availability code. Hope you haven’t forgotten that code. You’ll still need it here.
Next is to select your “Originating Office.” This is where you’re going to collect your certificate so choose an office close to you.
Confirm you’re not a robot and click “Begin.” .
Next you choose what document you want to upload and then choose from your laptop.
Attach all four documents listed above one after the other.
When’re done, click “Submit” and the “Confirm.”
When’ve confirm your submission, CONGRATULATIONS! You’re done with your registration!
Get yourself a cold glass of zobo while you wait for CAC to approve your registration. When go back to your “Dashboard” this is what you see.
This application was completed and submitted on a Friday. By Monday morning, the registration was completed.
Now let me show you some things that could go wrong. I’ve just described an ideal scenario where nothing went wrong.
Things That Could Go Wrong During Registration:
Using a name that is already in used or a name very close to another in use which could confuse customers. In that case, your name reservation is going to be DENIED! You’ll have to apply again to reserve another name.
Note that you’re going to make another payment for name reservation. So you need to choose your business name carefully.
Below is an example of someone who didn’t choose his business name well and was denied. He had to pay again for a second name search.
Another thing that can happen which will delay your registration process is that your submitted documents can be queried for the following reasons.
- Vague address with no street name and house or shop number. Your addresses should have a house/shop number. Ignore this at your own peril. You’re sure to get a query.
- Vague description of nature of business.
- Lengthy description of the nature of business. They’re going to tell you it’s too long to enter your certificate.
- Defaced ID card. Do not use an ID card that is defaced or too old. They’re going to query your application and demand that you bring the ID card for sighting. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to go through all that trouble. Use a good ID card.
- None attachment of passport photograph to registration form, If you upload your form without a passport photograph, they are going to query it.
These are the ones I can remember for now. If I remember more later, I will update them here.
Below is a comment from a friend on an article I published earlier on in the month about the extension of the 50% reduction in the cost of registration fee for business names window by CAC.
I really felt his pain and decided to write this step by step guide so that other people will not go through what he went through. Yomi thanks for the inspiration.
Update 20th October, 2019
Paying for Branch Address:
I’m making this update because someone asked a question about branch address. If you included a branch address in your application, you’re going to get a query advising you to pay N1000 for your branch address. This is how you go about it:
Visit remita website and where it says, “Who do you want to pay,” enter “Corporate Affairs Commission” Then choose “Business Name Change of Address” for service name. Enter other fields as shown i the screenshots below.
Once you’re done entering all the required fields, proceed with you payment and print your payment receipt. Attach the receipt to your registration payment receipt and upload your documents for approval.
You can finish this registration process within 24 hours if you this guide step by step. But sometime things do go wrong. So if you get stuck anywhere, just drop me a comment below and I’ll be available to respond to you within 1 hour except if I’m in church or sleeping. And because I get too busy lately, I’ll need you to notify me on whatsapp (08063306838) that you left me a comment on my website and need my urgent response.
I know there are some other people who wouldn’t like to go through all the trouble of learning how to do it themselves. They’d just prefer that the experts do it for them to save them all the stress and time. If that’s your case, we’ve got you covered too. Just contact us on WhatsApp: 08063306838 and we’ll help you out for ONLY N16000! This covers your registration fees and our charges. You pick up your certificate at the nearest CAC office to you.
28th June, 2020
Many people have been writing in the comments section about going to court to sign the oath and so on. Please, you don’t need to have any lawyer sign anything for you as long as it just a Business Name that you’re registering. I don’t know if the protocol is different in other offices but in Yola office, that place you see “Oath”, it’s being signed in their office before they give you your certificate.
I’ve registered people who collected their certificates in Abuja, Lagos, Jos, Port-Harcourt, Uyo, Calabar and many other places and no one had to have any lawyer sign for them. Just follow this guide religiously, you will not get queried.
Another update is about delay in the processing of your certificates and also delay in getting response from CAC when you write them these days. I got a notice on their website that I felt I should share with y’all.
For those who can’t read that clearly, let me help you out.
This is to inform our esteemed customers that in view of the Federal Government’s directive limiting working hours from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm and the cadre of officers required to be at work (i.e level 14 and above), the earlier published Service Delivery Timelines are no longer feasible. Customers should, therefore, ignore the earlier published timelines. The Commission will use its best endeavours to provide efficient services within the framework of the Covid-19 Regulations.

Before you leave, I want to move away from business registration matter a bit and ask whether you have a website for this business you’re registering? That you have taken the steps to register your business tells me that you’re a very serious business person. I’d recommend you consider building a website for your business and I gave some reasons why your business needs a professionally designed website.
Therefore, you either get someone do the website for you (you can have us do it for you) or you do it yourself using a pretty cool software I came across recently. And the best part? You can build a 3 page website on the platform absolutely FREE. It’s a no-brainer! Go do it NOW!
You can always reach me on Whatsapp – 08063306838. No calls please except if you want to give me money LOL. That one you fit call me.
Thanks for your time and remain blessed and stay out of trouble.
